And what a beautiful universe this kit has to traverse. The result would be this happy-go-lucky (pun very much intended) collect-a-thon filled with floating islands, wacky characters and enough vibrant color to turn your average Saturday morning cartoon green with envy. I almost see it as if the developers behind the Skylanders games were suddenly tasked with creating a standalone 3D platformer. Super Lucky’s Tale, which you can imagine as an expanded, fleshed-out iteration of Oculus Rift’s Lucky’s Tale virtual reality tech demo, is a modern love-letter to classics like Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, Banjo Kazooie and maybe even Crash Bandicoot, sans the marsupial’s corridor level design. So to say the least, it’s been refreshing to experience what feels like a mini mascot platformer renaisssance, one that's currently being celebrated in ultra high definition. These kinds of titles were par for the course two decades ago but have since become a sort of lost art, one that’s largely been subverted by grim, realistic shooters. And now in 2017, Xbox One X has entered our big, scary world alongside developer Playful Corp.’s adorable cartoon fox. PlayStation had Rayman (though I was more of a Battle Arena Toshinden guy). Nintendo 64 boasted the groundbreaking Super Mario 64. The Dreamcast launched with Sonic Adventure. Back in the ‘90s, it was just expected that you pushed your new console out into the great wide-open with the help of a colorful, kid-friendly character game.
